Giving FAQ
What is the difference between the “Operations” Fund and “Mission 2” Fund?
Our Operations fund is used for the normal operation of The Meeting House ministry—salaries, rent, program costs, and contributions to our other ministries. Our Mission 2 Fund is tied to our major missional goals. We are challenging ourselves to give above and beyond to big shared goals—extending compassion, expanding space for spiritual seekers, and deepening our core community.
How will my donations be used?
Your donations are primarily used to help us communicate the message of Jesus through the work of The Meeting House. A portion of your offering also goes to the
BIC denomination and individuals to fund their work in Canada and around the world. 97% of our income comes from donors like you. We are not regularly sponsored by any group or denomination. For a detailed view of where the money goes, audited financial statements are available upon request.
Will I get a tax receipt?
Yes. Annual tax receipts are mailed to your home in February for all donations of $20 or more. You can get up to 40% of your offerings back from the government through your tax return depending on how much you give and your income level. Some people use their refunds as an opportunity to give even more.
Can I donate online through my chequing account?
Yes. Follow the link on our website to “Give”. Debit donations can be made through the TelPay.ca button (link available the week of September 7, 2010). You may set up an account for recurring or one-time donations. Please use your offering envelope number with preceding zeros to total a five digit account number or use the first 5 letters in your last name. Receipts will be issued annually from The Meeting House along with other donations that we have received. The Meeting House pays only 50 cents per transaction.
Can I donate by credit card?
Yes. Follow the link on our website to “Give”. Our credit card donations are managed through
canadahelps.org. Their fee is 3.9%. Your tax receipt will be emailed immediately to you by Canada Helps. At our Oakville Production Site, we have a debit/credit card terminal at both of our Info Desks that accepts debit/credit cards. Slips must be placed in a clearly labeled envelope in order to receive an official tax receipt.
Can I donate securities?
Yes. If you contribute securities, you do not pay capital gains tax. For more information on how to donate securities contact our Finance Director, Judy Maranta (905.287.7013 or

Will my personal information be kept confidential?
Yes. The Meeting House keeps all personal information confidential. Your contributions are kept in strict confidence, and only those who process the information for tax receipts and use it for planning purposes have access to the records. We will not share any personal information unless required by law. Questions about our privacy policy should be directed to our Operations Director, Rod Tombs (905.287.7048 or

How much should I give?
The Bible talks about giving a “tithe” (10%) of our income as a good standard to follow. But that is not a hard and fast rule. For some, 10% sounds like a lot of money, and they choose to start by giving 4% or 5% and increase that amount over time. Many others choose to give with radical generosity and give well above 10%.
